Call to Recovery

At the Call to Recovery Addiction Anonymous groups, we seek to re-anchor the 12-Steps in our lives and to recognize the biblical framework they came from. Acknowledging a broken relationship with God, accepting moral responsibility for failures, admitting powerlessness and the need for outside help, asking God to remove defects of character, committing to making amends to all who have been harmed, seeking through prayer to improve conscious contact with God, carrying this message of healing to others – this formula for recovery comes straight from the pages of the Bible.

We meet at 6:30 pm in the C2R Building located at the West Campus on CR 3405.

Q: Why the Bible?
Because the Bible is the greatest book on recovery ever written. In its pages, we see God set out a plan for recovery, because ‘all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’. We all need help to recover from that fallen state. This makes recovery an essential part of life for everyone.
We are introduced to numerous individuals whose hurting and broken lives are restored through the wisdom and power of God, and ultimately with a personal relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ.
Without that personal relationship with Jesus Christ, there is no recovery – only disappointing substitutions and repeated failures.
Like the woman in Mark 5:26-32 who had suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding, and spent everything she had on doctors promising her a cure. From this belief that doctors and the world’s system had the answer, we find she got no better, but actually got worse. In verse 27 it reads, ‘But she had heard about Jesus, and thought if she could just touch His robe…she would be healed’. She did seek Jesus. She did touch His robe, and the result - Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.
Today’s times are no different. People think that drug treatment centers, counselors, doctors, therapists, mind over matter mantra, and so forth are the answer. But when they have spent all they had, and find themselves no better, but actually worse off than before – we hope they too will one day say, ‘but they heard about Jesus…’and they too will one day be…sitting, fully clothed, in their right minds, completely healed, able to take up their beds, and walk again in complete freedom.

Q: Why the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous?
Because the Big Book of AA is a text book on recovery. It is the story of how many thousands (today millions) of men and women who have recovered (AA intro page). In its pages is a program of recovery that becomes a way of living, having its advantages for all (AA page xiii).  The tremendous fact for every one of us is that we have discovered a common solution or a way out on which we can absolutely agree (AA page 17).
That solution is: 1) the power of the fellowship which supports us, and 2) the power of the vital spiritual experience (as a result from working the 12-Steps), which changes us bringing about recovery from a seemingly hopeless state of body and mind. This is the solution to addiction; two different powers… but one solution.
As we work Steps 1-3 to the best of our ability, we begin to be at peace with God. As we work Steps 4-7 to the best of our ability, we begin to be at peace with ourselves. As we then work Steps 8-9 to the best of our ability, we will now begin to be at peace with the people and the world around us.
By working Step 10 (which is applying Steps 4-9 in our daily lives), this is how we stay free of our old ideas and begin spiritual growth.
In Step 11, we learn to talk to God (pray) and to listen to God (meditation) to improve our conscious contact with God, praying only for knowledge of God’s will for us, and the power to carry it out.
In Step 12, as a result of working these Steps to the best of our abilities, we are changed people (we are not the same), and begin to carry the message of God’s healing and delivering power to others, as we continue to practice these principles in all our affairs.
